Mexico-U.S. Migration and Return: A Bi-National
Perspective on Older Adults”
Dr. Fernando Riosmena
Dr. Fernando Riosmena is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Currently, he is a visiting fellow at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies. He received his B.A. in Marketing from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Guadalajara and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests intersect the fields of formal and social demography with an emphasis on how demographic processes are associated with the social mobility, well-being, and development in Latin American societies and immigrant communities from said region in the United States. He has done work on the formal demography of labor migration; the role of social ties and their legal status in explaining inter-country differences in US migration dynamics in Latin America; and the association between migration and other life course events. Besides these issues, Fernando is currently doing research on the health selectivity of U.S.-bound and return migration of Mexicans while looking at differences between self-reported measures and clinical reports, and the potential role of ecological conditions (i.e. health and socioeconomic characteristics) in origins.
